Gina Joy Carano (born April 16, 1982) is an American actress, television personality, fitness model, and former mixed martial artist.
Carano was born in Dallas County, Texas, and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, the daughter of Dana Joy Cason and casino executive and former professional football player Glenn Carano. She has two sisters, one older and one younger. She was raised by her mother after her parents divorced when Gina was 7. She has said that her family celebrate "an Italian festival" every year, though she is of a "small percentage of Italian" descent.
Carano began her training with straight Muay Thai to competitive MMA, where she competed in Strikeforce and EliteXC. She was featured in ESPN The Magazine as well as Maxim. Her popularity led to her being called the "face of women's MMA" (although Carano herself rejected the title) and was ranked 5th on a list of the "Top 10 Influential Women" of 2008.
Outside the ring, Carano performed as "Crush" in the revamped 2008 reality series American Gladiators. Carano has pursued a career in acting since she retired from competition. She made her film debut in the 2009 direct-to-DVD martial arts film Blood and Bone with Michael Jai White. She has subsequently appeared in Steven Soderbergh's 2011 action film Haywire, Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Deadpool (2016) and starred as Cara Dune in the TV series The Mandalorian (2019–2020).
Carano has faced criticism for her views on social and political issues. In August 2020, she was criticised for not supporting Black Lives Matter on Twitter; she called her critics "cowards and bullies" while also "liking" posts that denigrated the movement. She was accused of transphobia when she placed the words "beep/bop/boop" on her online profile, seeming to mock the use of preferred gender pronouns by transgender people and their allies. She later deleted the terms, saying fellow Mandalorian actor Pedro Pascal "helped understand" the meaning behind preferred pronouns.
Carano has shared misinformation online about COVID-19 mask mandates and falsely suggested the existence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 United States presidential election. Some critics used the hashtag #FireGinaCarano to urge Disney to replace Carano on The Mandalorian. Carano eventually began an account on the social media platform Parler while retaining her other social-media accounts.
The hashtag #FireGinaCarano resurfaced in February 2021 after Carano shared a post on Instagram comparing political polarization in the US to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany. In response, Lucasfilm stated that Carano was no longer employed by them and would not be appearing in any future Star Wars projects. That same day, Carano was dropped by talent agency UTA due to the controversy.
