Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros Sota (Spanish pronunciation: [seβeˈɾjano βaÊŽesˈteɾos]; 9 April 1957 â€" 7 May 2011) was a Spanish professional golfer, a World No. 1 who was one of the sport's leading figures from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s.

In 2008 he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Ballesteros was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the second time at the BBC Sports Personality Awards 2009. He was presented with the award at his home in Spain by his compatriot and former Ryder Cup teammate José MarÃa Olazábal.
